Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid heaped praise on Xavier Worthy after the rookie wide receiver made his NFL debut with two touchdowns as the Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 in their 2024 season opener on Thursday, ESPN reported. vox888

Worthy made a spectacular start with a 21-yard run in the first quarter to tie the game 7-7, before the 28th overall pick caught a pass from Patrick Mahomes and scored a 35-yard touchdown in the final quarter to help the Chiefs pull ahead 27-17 and advance 27-20.

“Xavier came in as a rookie and scored a touchdown on the run and the catch, that was great,” Reed said of the rookie wide receiver.

Worthy became just the second NFL player to have a touchdown catch or a passing game of more than 20 yards, following James Brim of the Minnesota Vikings in 1987. Worthy had two catches on three occasions for 47 yards and one carry for 21 yards.

“He looked calm, composed and focused as always,” Mahomes said of the rookie wide receiver. “You can’t see the excitement in him. He came on and scored. We’re going to continue to use him more and more, of course, but I thought he scored big points today and scored big points in big moments. It’s good to get the whole offense going and see how everybody is doing.”

The Chiefs were down 7-0 before Worthy used 18.45 mph on his first touch to run for a 21-yard touchdown. “It’s crazy,” the rookie wide receiver said. “We did it in the preseason and I fumbled, so it’s pretty bad, but for them to trust me, I told (offensive line coach Matt Nagy) ‘I think this play is going to score,’ and it did. So it was an amazing moment for me to have my first touchdown in the NFL.” ( vox888 )
