Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has confirmed he will not be asking head coach Kevin Stefanski to design more of a running game for him, as the 29-year-old will only carry the ball when it makes sense, ESPN reports.  thaisiambet

The Browns offense has struggled through the first three games of the 2024 season, ranking third-last in the NFL in total yards, rushing yards and passing yards. Watson has had a tough time in all three games as well.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to the Las Vegas Raiders, another option was proposed: have Watson run the ball more, but the 29-year-old quarterback is against the idea. 

“I’m not going to go in there and ask them to design another run. If I don’t have to run, I’m not going to run,” Watson said. “I’m not trying to take hits. I’m not a running quarterback in a sense. I can make things happen, but I’m not trying to run.” 

‘I’m not a running back. It’s not my specialty. They signed me to throw, make decisions and be a quarterback, not a running back.’ 

Watson ranks dead last in average of 4.8 yards per attempt, 3.8 yards per dropback, 31.9 percent completion rate and 16 sacks, and he also dropped back to throw the ball more times than any other quarterback combined (141).

In short-term situations, Stefanski could also opt for ball-carrying quarterback Jameis Winston to replace Watson. 

“I wouldn’t say it wouldn’t help the team’s offense if it was just to run the game,” Watson said. “But after coming back from (shoulder surgery), I don’t think it would be the most important thing for (Stefanski) to put me in that situation.”  ( thaisiambet )
