The German goalkeeper left the game and was immediately taken to hospital, before being discharged later that evening in a wheelchair and returning to Barcelona.
Ter Stegen has been initially diagnosed with a condition that could see him sidelined for around eight months, or very likely for the entire 2024-25 season. However, the 32-year-old is set to undergo a series of tests on Monday to confirm his condition.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reports that Ter Stegen’s injury is likely to be serious enough to have torn a knee ligament and surgery is unavoidable, requiring around seven to eight months of recovery, with his return likely to be in May next year.
Ter Stegen has had knee problems in the past, having to undergo two operations in 2020. However, the two injuries were not related, so it may be a small advantage before the results of the tests are known.
