Darnold will start against the Broncos on Sunday, his third starting quarterback of the season, following Baker Mayfield and P.J. Walker. Mayfield started before the former Cleveland Browns quarterback suffered an injury, allowing Walker to lead the team before suffering a similar injury. Mayfield returned to the starting lineup but struggled before Wilks gave Darnold his first start of the season.
The former New York Jets quarterback sprained his upper ankle in the preseason and has since been placed on injured reserve. He last started in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Jan. 9.
Darnold is 4-7 as a starter for the Panthers in 2021, posting a 38.6 quarterback rating, bettered only by Zach Wilson (33.4) and Justin Fields (31.4).
Wilkes has previously said the Panthers want to watch Darnold and evaluate the 25-year-old quarterback, who is entering the final year of his contract like Mayfield, before making a decision on the futures of both quarterbacks.
