The 2024 season will be Irsay’s 38th season with Indy. At 25, he became the NFL’s youngest general manager after taking over the position in 1984 and becoming team owner in 1997, helping the Colts make the playoffs 16 times, win two AFC Championships and one Super Bowl.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved owner and CEO Jim Irsay passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon,” the Colts said in a statement. “Jim’s dedication and love for the Indianapolis Colts, in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community and, most importantly, his love for his family, was unparalleled.”
‘We offer our deepest condolences to his daughter, Carly Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, Kellen Jackson and his entire family as we mourn with them,’
‘Some of Jim’s fondest memories come from his youth working in training camp in Baltimore and the relationships he grew up with the players, coaches and staff, whom he considered to be his extended family. He worked in every department before being named the youngest general manager in team history in 1984.’
‘When the Colts arrived in Indianapolis after he became sole owner in 1997, he led the Colts to multiple division titles and led the city to its first Super Bowl. Jim’s love and admiration for the NFL, in addition to its history, traditions and principles, carried him into the game for the more than 50 years he was in the league.’
‘Jim’s generosity was felt throughout Indianapolis, Indiana and across the country. He was active in charity work every day and never hesitated to help countless organizations and individuals improve their lives. Music was one of Jim’s passions and the ability to share his bands and collections with millions of people around the world brought him great joy.’
‘Simply put, he wanted to make the world a better place, and his philosophy has never changed. Jim will be deeply missed by his family and fans everywhere, but we will continue to be inspired by his caring and unique spirit.’
