Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan plans in the 2023 draft to address the needs of the top two picks by adding a tall, athletic player. It fits the brand of football of Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Iron Man, according to a report from the ‘Pittsburgh Tribune’ on Sunday. ( lisbon365 )
Social media praised Khan’s decision during his first official draft as general manager of the Steelers, and his aggressiveness has led to him being dubbed the Khan artist.
‘What do they call him, Artist Khan?’ Tomlin said. ‘I like that. That’s really cool. It’s a cool nickname.’
Khan, who was sitting next to Tomlin, quickly denied and laughed, saying, ‘I’ve been called worse names.’
The Steelers traded up three spots to select Broderick Jones, a former offensive tackle from Georgia, at No. 14 because Khan knew the New York Jets were one spot above them. Wants an offensive tackle as well. It’s the first time Pittsburgh has selected an offensive tackle in the first round since 1996, when they selected Jamin Stephens from North Carolina A&T. Rank 29
On the second day of the draft, Khan selected Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr., son of former Steele linebacker Joey Porter Sr. He entered the draft with the No. 32 pick, but this opportunity wouldn’t have happened if Khan hadn’t traded winger Chase Claypool to the Chicago Bears last year.
The Steelers also selected defensive tackle Keanu Benton from Wisconsin 49th overall, before trading a back in the third round to get back a fourth-round pick from the trade-up of Jones. The first round then selected Darnell Washington, an inside wing from Georgia, at No. 93.
The Steelers’ first four picks in the 2023 draft are all in draft guru Daniel Jeremiah’s top 150 picks for this year’s class.
‘It was a productive weekend,’ Khan said. ‘I feel we are a better football team today at 7:59pm on Thursday. I think we are in a good position.’
‘It’s great. The journey here was amazing. I have a great group of people that I do this with. And they work very hard for this organization. I don’t know if it’s fully hit me or not.’
