The Houston Chronicle reports that Smith will need surgery on his non-dominant hand, but the date of the surgery has not yet been set and he will have to wait until the swelling goes down.

The 21-year-old is in his third professional season with the franchise, averaging 11.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1 assist in 30.9 minutes per game across 33 games.

Head coach Ime Udoka solved the problem by using veteran Jeff Green in place of Smith Jr. in Friday’s 86-109 loss to the Boston Celtics. 

And from now on, when Amen Thompson is free of his two- match suspension, he will start in place of Green again.
