McCarthy, 61, a former Green Bay Packers and Cowboys head coach, will reportedly not return to coaching for the 2025 season after interviewing with the Chicago Bears before selecting Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their new head coach.
McCarthy was also invited to interview for the New Orleans Saints, but the 61-year-old coach decided to withdraw from the Saints interview.
This isn’t the first time McCarthy has taken a coaching leave after leaving a team. When he was fired by the Packers in the 2018 offseason, he didn’t return to coaching until the Cowboys brought him in as head coach during the 2020 offseason.
McCarthy spent five seasons as head coach of the Cowboys, posting a 49-35 record and three playoff appearances, but never in the Divisional Playoffs. During his tenure with the two franchises, he led the teams to 12 of 18 playoff appearances, including leading the Cowboys to Super Bowl XLV.
