New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen decided to start practice an hour early and move it indoors due to the impact of Hurricane Francine that made landfall in southeastern Louisiana as the Saints worked on a game plan for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, NFL Network reports.

“We’ll probably find a corner of the room to lay down for a while,” Allen said. “The worst weather is coming in the evening and early in the morning, so we’ll try to get it done by then. I don’t see anybody trying to get out here in that weather.”

The Saints practiced an hour earlier than usual on the team’s indoor field, then players were sent home before the storm hit, while the coaching staff remained to plan Sunday’s game. 

‘We still have work to do, even though the situation is not perfect,’ Derek Carr says. ‘I’ll be home tonight to read a book, but I’ll do it while all my kids are sitting next to me.’

‘I owe it to my teammates to be focused and ready for tomorrow. We’re human, but we know we have a job to do. And we also know our city has been through a lot. So our prayers are with the entire state of Louisiana. You know where this storm is moving through?’

Hurricane Francine slammed into Louisiana late Wednesday as a Category 2 storm that forecasters warned could bring severe storm surge, widespread flooding and strong winds to parts of the Gulf Coast. It made landfall about 30 miles southwest of Morgan City, packing maximum sustained winds near 100 mph (155 kph). 

While Hurricane Francine was less severe than Katrina (2005) and Ida (2021), the Saints’ decision to adjust their schedule made sense for the safety of players and other personnel. 

“We want everyone to be safe, but we also feel like we can get the job done and get everyone safe without trying to manage all the logistics of evacuating,” Allen said. ( thaisiambet )
