superwin636 Premier League explains dramatic moment in which referee awarded West Ham a penalty in their 2-1 win over Manchester United superwin636
West Ham narrowly beat Man Utd 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time penalty by Jarrod Bowen after a clash in the box between Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings.
Referee David Coote initially allowed play to continue but was told by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor himself before awarding West Ham a penalty which would eventually be the winning goal.
The Premier League explained via the “Premier League Match Centre” on the X platform or Twitter that “the referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for the incident where De Ligt clashed with Danny Ings.”
“However, VAR thought there was sufficient contact around Ings’ lower leg and advised the referee to check the on-field (monitor). The referee then changed his decision and awarded a penalty.”
As expected, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lashed out at VAR after the controversial penalty was awarded. ( superwin636 )
