Young was on the verge of being released six months ago before returning to the starting lineup in Week 8 in place of Andy Dalton, who was feeling more comfortable in head coach Dave Canales’ system. He’s completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions in 10 games, re-emerging as the franchise’s quarterback.
“It’s definitely a privilege,” Young said. “Obviously the same staff and a lot of things on the offensive team are still the same, so for us to continue to build and grow, it’s something we’re really looking forward to. But we also know there’s work to be done and just knowing what work needs to be done, we’re excited about that part as well, just to grow and create. So it’s nice. I wouldn’t want to be in this group with any other group, so we’re all excited for this year.”
The return of Adam Thielen and rising stars Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker leaves the Panthers wide receiver room open to fill in the draft later this month, after the Panthers signed Rico Dowdle to play alongside Chuba Hubbard at running back.
Still looking to move on from last year, the 23-year-old quarterback insists he’ll keep working hard. ‘For me, it’s a fresh start every year. We can finish strong, which is good, but we have to start next season 0-0 and not be able to keep that. We understand we have to build from that. We don’t have the right to do that.’
