The Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts are close to hiring their new head coaches, with Jonathan Gannon the Cardinals’ favorite and Shawn Steiken the Indy favorite, NFL Network reported Sunday. ( pgzen )
The Cardinals are set to interview Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers coach Gannon, who is coming off his Super Bowl appearance. The 40-year-old is a likely candidate to become the Cardinals’ next head coach, along with New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who are set to interview for the second round of jobs this week.
Owner Jim Irsay’s Colts are expected to name Steiken, the 37-year-old Eagles offensive coordinator, as the new head coach, ahead of other contenders such as LA Rams wide receivers coach Raheem Morris, Green Bay Packers special teams coach Rich Bisaccia and Indy interim head coach Jeff Saturday.
Meanwhile, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is still wanted by the Washington Commanders and Baltimore Ravens, who are looking for a new offensive coordinator. If Bieniemy is not under contract after this season, and the 53-year-old is available to move elsewhere, current quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy has a chance to become the Chiefs’ next offensive coordinator.
Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson is also a target for the Carolina Panthers and Ravens, and could become the Eagles’ next offensive coordinator if Steiken moves to Indy as head coach.
