Haaland has now scored 79 Premier League goals and if he stays until the end of his contract, he will be 34 and will have a chance to catch up with Alan Shearer’s all-time scoring record of 260 goals.

Pep has congratulated Haaland and stressed that it shows the trust between the player and the club at a time when the team’s form has dipped since last season and the Premier League’s financial rules case.

“If he keeps that record then of course (breaking the Premier League goalscoring record), it’s up to him and the team but it’s amazing news for the club.

“I don’t feel like he’s going to let it go because he’s signed this contract. He’s a great fighter, he loves the club, the people around him, the Premier League and living here with his family.
