Plot details are still unknown, but the story will serve as a prequel to the 2013 film directed by Guillermo del Toro. Sources also say there is a chance that a new film in the series will follow.
The first film grossed over $400 million worldwide, and was followed by a 2018 sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, which del Toro did not return to direct. The film only grossed $291 million worldwide and received mixed reviews. It was then adapted into an animated series, Pacific Rim: The Black, which premiered on Netflix in two seasons in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
The original story tells of a world where humans are invaded by giant alien Kaiju, who sneak into Earth through a dimensional portal under the ocean. Humans create giant robots, or Jaegers, to fight them.
Eric Heisserer is best known for his screenwriting credits on Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival,” which earned him an Oscar nomination. He also wrote the sci-fi thriller “Bird Box” and created the Netflix series “Shadow and Bone.”
