The Houston Texans have agreed to a one-year, $5 million extension with Davis Mills to back up second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud through the 2025 season, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. nuno168

The former third-round pick in the 2021 draft class was entering the final year of his rookie contract when the Texans signed a one-year extension that will keep the 25-year-old as Stroud’s backup through the 2025 season. The new deal is in line with the $5 million annual salaries of backups Andy Dalton, Drew Lock and Jarrett Stidham.

Mills is set to earn a base salary of $3.116 million in 2024, although he will become a free agent next summer. The 25-year-old quarterback has opted to stay in Houston for another year. 

Mills started 11 games in his rookie season, going 2-9, completing 66.8 percent of his passes for 2,664 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He started 15 games in the 2022 season, going 3-11-1, completing 61.0 percent of his passes for 3,118 yards, 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions before losing the position to Stroud last season.
