Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields, 25, admitted he hasn’t played well enough as he makes way for Russell Wilson, who returns from injury, to start Sunday against the New York Jets, NFL Network reports. nuno168
Fields has started all six games this season since Wilson suffered a calf injury. He has completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception as the Steelers move to a 4-2 record, but the 25-year-old quarterback’s overall form has been lackluster and Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin decided to give Wilson his first start on Sunday.
“I don’t think I played well enough, to be honest,” Fields told ESPN’s Brook Prior. “I think if I played well enough, I don’t think anybody should have played or shouldn’t have played.”
Fields wasn’t outstanding, but he continued to perform well and grow. He threw for over 240 yards twice in his first six games, scoring two touchdowns with just one interception, and rushed for 231 yards and five scores. That should have been enough to keep him, but Tomlin decided to give Wilson the starting job, a somewhat surprising decision.
“First of all, I think Justin did a great job,” Wilson said. “I think Justin is a great quarterback. I’ve played against him over the years. He’s a great football player and a great teammate. I think the most important thing for us is we want to continue to get better and grow this season. That’s our goal every year.” ( nuno168 )
