Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan said ahead of Sunday’s season opener against the Chicago Bears that he will treat rookie quarterback Caleb Williams with respect, The Tennessean reports. nuno168
The Titans will face the Bears under rookie No. 1 quarterback Williams, hoping to maintain the winless streak of the last 10 rookie No. 1 draft picks.
The previous 10 quarterbacks drafted by the No. 1 draft have all started their first career game without a win (Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray, Jameis Winston, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford and Carson Palmer), all of whom went a combined 9-1 after Murray became the only undefeated quarterback in his debut, a 27-27 draw with the Detroit Lions.
Not only has the number one quarterback in the draft not won a game in Week 1, but since David Carr took over in 2002, he has also been abysmal.
Before draft no. 1 Caleb Williams leads the Bears to a game against the Titans on Sunday, Sept. 8, where he has the chance to either extend or end the streak, Tennessee coach Callahan said he will treat the Bears’ rookie quarterback with respect.
“He’s everything you’d expect a No. 1 overall pick to be,” Callahan said. “You have to treat him that way and treat him with that respect. You definitely have to do that in this league. He’s got to do that in the regular season. I just hope it’s not the first week.”
Williams has shown big-play potential in the preseason, with the improvisational and problem-solving skills he showed at USC, and Callahan also praised the rookie quarterback’s ability.
“I’m a big fan of Caleb Williams and what he did at USC,” Callahan said. “I’ve watched him play for years. He’s a great player. It’s really fun to watch him play for quarterback fans.” ( nuno168 )
