The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana reported on Friday that Real Madrid have opened talks with Leverkusen manager Xavier Alonso over a possible return to the Spanish capital this summer.
Real Madrid executives believe Alonso’s style of play, which fits into modern football, could help unlock the potential of many of the current squad’s players.
While Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti is aware of the talks and still wants to stay at the club until at least the end of his contract in the summer of 2026, he will need to lead Los Blancos to win La Liga or the Champions League, which could give the 65-year-old his wish.
Alonso, meanwhile, is still contracted to Leverkusen until the summer of 2026 and it remains unclear whether the 43-year-old is ready to take the next step as Real Madrid manager. ( moodeng )
