vox888 Thompson makes hasty decision to leave Golden State Warriors, according to team owner vox888
Golden State Warriors owner Joe LeCob has provided insight after Klay Thompson decided to leave the team to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, with the 34-year-old guard making the decision too soon despite the Warriors’ efforts to retain him, NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ( vox888 )
“We made him an offer, very well documented, in the autumn, significantly higher than the amount he signed last time,” Lecob said.
Lecob’s revelation supports reports that the Warriors offered Thompson a two-year, $24 million-a-year deal before the 2023-24 season, before the 34-year-old guard decided to move to a three-year, $50 million deal with the Mavericks this offseason.
Thompson also declined the offer during preseason camp, before LeCob revealed the offer was rescinded and would not be available when he enters free agency.
‘That was obviously an offer in the fall and we were in the process of considering offers (during the early free agency period),’ Lecob confirmed. ‘We really can’t do that, he knows that, without seeing how much is going on. We have a lot of things to do.’
But rather than wait for a new offer from the Warriors, Thompson decided not to return to Golden State before the free-agent market even started.
‘He made the decision a bit too soon. He made the decision for us. It wasn’t what we wanted, but it happened,’ Lecob said.
