Morton takes over as Lions offensive coordinator after Ben Johnson left to become head coach with the Chicago Bears. The Detroit Lions offensive coordinator believes his familiarity with Goff’s system will help drive the team’s offense, having worked as a senior offensive coordinator in 2022 before moving to work with Sean Payton for the past two years with the Denver Broncos.
“I think it’s really important because it all starts with the quarterback,” Morton said. “Just getting to know him a little bit, and when I was here, I was in the quarterback room, so I know what he likes, what he doesn’t like. That’s really important as a play caller. We’ll continue to work here when the guys come back, so I can get to know him a little bit more and the games he really likes and what they’re good at here.”
Morton stressed that the offense will be as dependent on the quarterback as it was when Johnson was in charge, with the 55-year-old recalling his time with Drew Brees at the New Orleans Saints and saying having a future Hall of Fame quarterback is key to the offense’s consistency.
‘They’ve built a philosophy here. My job is to continue the vision of how (coach) Dan (Campbell) wants to build things. We’ll tweak things here and there and see how we can make it better.’ ( kuiper999 )
