Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a chance to become the first player this century to win the MVP award and the Super Bowl in the same season if the 27-year-old leads the Chiefs to a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, NFL Network reports.( Kodma168 )
Mahomes won the 2022 NFL MVP award, his second career win after his first success in 2018. The 27-year-old quarterback is also aiming to win his second Super Bowl after winning it in 2019 and becoming the first player to win both the MVP and Super Bowl in the same season this century.
If the Chiefs beat the Eagles on Sunday, Mahomes will become the seventh player in NFL history to win MVP and a Super Bowl in the same season, and the first player in the last decade to do so. The last person to do so was Tom Brady, who won MVP in 2017, but the New England Patriots lost to the Eagles in Super Bowl.
Kurt Warner, the legendary St. Louis Rams quarterback, became the last player to win the MVP award and the Super Bowl in 1999.
The next nine MVPs to lose in a Super Bowl are Warner (Rams), Rich Gannon (Oakland Raiders), Sean Alexander (Seattle Seahawks), Brady (Patriots), Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts), Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers), Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) and Brady (Patriots).
If Mahomes succeeds, he will become the seventh person to win both NFL MVP and Super Bowl titles in the same season, joining Warner (Rams), Brett Favre (Green Bay Packers, 1996), Steve Young (San Francisco 49ers, 1994), Joe Montana (49ers, 1989), Terry Bradshaw (Pittsburgh Steelers, 1978) and Bart Starr (Packers, 1966).
