The San Francisco 49ers selected Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 draft class to become their new franchise quarterback, but he struggled with injuries, playing in just eight games and starting four, until he was traded to the Cowboys in August 2023 for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 draft.
“I think the biggest thing is I’ve learned so much about myself and who I am on and off the field,” Lance said. “This off-season, I’ve done my best mentally, physically and spiritually to know who I am, where I am and be able to show up.”
The Cowboys have Lance battling Rush in training camp and the preseason for Prescott’s backup spot. Rush, 30, joined the Cowboys undrafted in 2017. He has played in 26 games and had a memorable 2022 campaign after Prescott’s injury, going 4-1 in five starts.
Lance has been listening and learning in 2023, which has given him more confidence, saying, “My confidence is definitely higher than when I got into the NFL.”
‘I don’t know what to expect. I think that’s probably most, if not all, rookies at one point or throughout their first year. I feel good about where I’m at, continue to improve, continue to learn and continue to be a good quarterback.’
