Kindee1688 Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has insisted he is OK after being rushed to hospital following a brutal kick to the head by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. Kindee1688

Palace chairman Steve Parish told the BBC Roberts “put his fellow professional at risk and could have been fatal”. ( Kindee1688 )

Roberts was sent off in the eighth minute after a VAR review during Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash, with video showing him kicking Mateta in the side of the head as he ran off his line to clear the ball.

The 27-year-old French forward was treated on the pitch and given oxygen before being taken to hospital, where he was replaced by Eddie Nketiah, who scored the winner in the 3-1 Premier League win.

Palace boss Oliver Glasner said the foul “could have ended JP’s career”, while Millwall boss Alex Neil insisted Roberts did not intend to hurt Mateta.

Mateta posted on social media: “I’m fine. I hope to be back soon and stronger. Well done everyone for a great job today.”

Palace later confirmed that Mateta had been discharged from hospital.

“He received specialist treatment and received 25 stitches on a laceration on his left ear,” Palace said.

“All the scans came out normal and JP is feeling better.”

Mateta has been in fine form for Palace this season, scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances, including eight in his last eight Premier League games.
