Portuguese outlet Record reports that Sporting Lisbon are still fighting a legal battle with Inter Milan to claim €30 million in damages over the transfer of Joao Mario in 2021, which is believed to have involved a conspiracy to avoid terms in the deal.

Sporting have claimed that the mutual agreement between Inter and Joao Mario to terminate his contract in 2021 was unlawful, with the Portuguese midfielder having signed for Benfica shortly afterwards.

In fact, Inter had an agreement with Sporting since the 2016 transfer that prohibited the sale of Joao Mario to any other club in Portugal, so it seems that both parties tried to find a mutual solution and decided to use the termination of the contract to be able to sign for Benfica.

Sporting had initially had their €30 million claim rejected by FIFA in damages but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) accepted the case and will hold a hearing on December 9.

Joao Mario is one of Inter’s worst signings after paying a massive €44.78m to sign him from Sporting in the summer of 2016, but he has struggled to adapt to Serie A and has failed to impress for the Nerazzurri. Having to pay another €30m would be an undoubted failure. ( vox888 )
