The Detroit Lions have hired former Stanford head coach David Shaw to join Dan Campbell’s staff as the new throwing game coordinator, marking his first return to the NFL as a coach since 2005, NFL Network reports. hotfuns
Shaw was the Baltimore Ravens’ wide receivers coach in 2005 before moving to the San Diego State University ranks in 2006 as wide receivers coach and pitching coordinator. He then moved to Stanford as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach from 2007-09, becoming their head coach in 2011, leaving the position in 2022, with a 96-54 record.
Shaw previously served as the Denver Broncos’ head coaching executive until 2024. He interviewed for the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints head coaching jobs before those jobs went to Ben Johnson and Kellen More, respectively.
Shaw will take over from Tanner Instrand, who has moved to the New York Jets as offensive coordinator under former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who has moved to the head coach position under Gang Green, with the former Stanford head coach working with new Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton.
