The Italy international made his debut for the Gunners in a 2-0 win at Aston Villa, coming on as a 79th-minute substitute in place of Jurrien Timber at left-back with the team leading 2-0, and Gary Neville applauded Arteta’s move for the new signing. ( thaisiambet )
“A successful transfer window is about maintaining stability in the squad and adding one or two more places as the final piece of the jigsaw, in the two games against Villa last season left-back was the weak link,” Gary told Sky Sports.
“We saw what Man City did in the last 10 games of the season, Josko Gvardiol made a huge impact at left-back, not just defensively but offensively as well – with his power, his strength, his size . Arteta responded to that.”
“He knew Timber would come back, but he still bought Calafiori. He’s big, powerful, strong, can play in a variety of positions. That’s a clear response to what he needed last season.”
“You talk about scoring one or two goals that could turn the tide of the title race. That could happen today. I like what Timber is doing. He’s keeping a close eye on Leon Bailey.
“He (Bailey) is a tough guy to play against, but Timber is confident on the ball, he looks good in the middle of the park and does the job that Zinchenko does, and when Calafiori comes on he looks strong, he’s ready to fight, he’s got that spirit about him.”
“Arteta has that now – it’s a great way to adapt.”
