New Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has revealed he was pleased with his side’s performance on their opening pre-season tour of the United States, drawing 2-2 with Manchester City before winning 4-1 on penalties, Diario Sport reported on Wednesday.
‘We played very well against a great team. We defended and attacked together as a team and that’s what we wanted. We fought for each other. Maybe in the first half we played too deep. Our idea was to go a little bit further. We needed to have more possession but we are playing against Man City.’ ( hotfuns )
‘Pep Guardiola has been here for eight years and we want to do the same thing as them on a philosophical level, maybe a little bit differently,’ Flick said.
Barcelona opted for Gerard Martin, Clement Lenglet, Sergi Dominguez and Hector Fort in a back four that struggled early on on the right flank but finished off the game better in the second half.
‘I wasn’t sure if we played well defensively, but we did. It was a great match.’
‘We have spoken to the players and we will continue to work with the staff to tell them what we want from them. I have said that in my presentation to La Masia.’
Asked about youngsters Marc Casado and Marc Bernal, the German coach said: ‘I don’t want to focus on the names of the players after just one game. They did really well, as I said, we attacked and defended together. We showed them what we wanted and the boys did really well against a great team. ‘
