De la Fuente said after the game: “I couldn’t be happier. We are a real team, European champions. Every day I am more proud of the players and grateful for the support from all over Spain.”

Asked what he said to his team at half-time after they scored their first goal just over a minute into the game, the 63-year-old replied: “Nothing.”

“It’s just a question of getting the energy that we have, it’s a question of having the confidence that they know what the match is like.”

“They are the best in the world, I have said it before and I stand by it, and we can always be better.”
