Timber joined Arsenal from Ajax last summer but suffered a serious knee injury, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on the opening day of the season, which kept him out for a long time. He returned to play again in the opening game of the season.

The Dutchman has continued to build his fitness over the summer and arrived at pre-season camp fully fit, having started each of Arsenal’s first three friendlies, including the latest, which helped the team come from behind to beat Manchester United 2-1 on Sunday morning in Thailand.

Arteta is delighted to have Timber as an option for the new season, saying: “He’s like a new signing for us.”

“He’s trying to get his rhythm back now because he missed so much of last year,”
