The Carolina Panthers said Thursday that Chuck Thompson has been placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season after the 24-year-old outside linebacker suffered a shoulder injury, NFL Network reported. cup1688
Thompson, a four-year linebacker, has struggled with a shoulder issue all season, but has played in 14 games and started 11. He has been a key part of the Panthers’ defense after Thomas Davis served the first four games of his suspension. If Davis decides to retire, Thompson would be the replacement for Luke Kikli next season.
The 24-year-old linebacker finished the season with 79 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one pass breakup and one forced fumble. The former first-round draft pick is entering the fifth year of his rookie contract in 2019 and the Panthers could sign him this offseason.
Thompson’s placement on the injured reserve prompted the Panthers to move rookie Kyle Allen from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, where he will be Taylor Heinicke’s backup for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. ( cup1688 )
