Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets this offseason and the 26-year-old quarterback is expected to be head coach Aaron Glenn’s new running back for Gang Green in the 2025 season, but there’s still a chance the Jets could select another quarterback in the draft later this April.
Asked if the Jets would select a new quarterback to compete for the starting job, Fields said: “I don’t really like to answer rhetorical questions, but like I said, I’m willing to teach. However, I don’t really care about rhetorical questions.”
Fields also said he doesn’t want to pressure management to choose a certain player or position. “I think that’s beyond my skill level, so I’ll choose whatever they choose,” he said.
The Jets are in the midst of a rebuild after going 5-12 last season, and Fields understands that turning things around may not happen all at once.
“I’ve been on good teams, I’ve been on bad teams,” Fields said. “So just the attitude and the leadership, like you said, AG (Aaron Glenn) was in the same situation in Detroit where he didn’t start off hot. I think he knows how to turn a bad situation into a good one.”
‘I’ve been on teams that have won three straight and lost 14 and things like that, and certainly Pittsburgh last year, we had a pretty good team that made the playoffs and started off strong. So I’ve seen both sides of the coin. I can tell the difference between a team that’s not doing well and a team that’s good.
