McTominay’s only goal as Napoli beat Torino 1-0 on Sunday kept them top of the Serie A table and it was the Scotland midfielder’s fourth goal in all competitions for the Partenopei and his third in Serie A in 10 starts.

Conte was asked if signing McTominay was key to his acceptance into the Napoli job after the club splashed out €30.5m to sign him from Manchester United.

“I accepted Napoli’s offer because it is a great club. I didn’t set any conditions for this move.”

“It’s normal for clubs to ask me about recruitment. I try to choose the best players. We had success with Scott because he wasn’t a regular at Manchester United.”
