The Commanders selected Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft, but Quinn did not publicly indicate that the rookie quarterback would be the starter until Washington head coach officially confirmed Monday.
“We knew we were going to get there, but we’re excited to see how we get there,” Quinn said of Daniels’ confirmation of his starting spot. “So to see him do it all, that’s a rare fighter.”
Quinn confirms Daniels’ selection as Commanders’ starting quarterback, something the media has been calling for him to do for a long time.
‘You’ve been under too much pressure the past few weeks. I feel like it’s time to tell you right away,’ Quinn said with a smile. ‘I’ll know. You’ll know. He’ll know.’
Daniels impressed in preseason action, his confidence on display on third downs and a 42-yard deep bomb to cement his status as the No. 2 overall pick in his first game against the New York Jets, and he was strong against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.
“Everything you get in life, nothing comes for free,” Daniels said. “What DQ (Dan Quinn) and they teach here is competition, and you’ve got to earn your place. You’ve got to earn your place on the field and that position. Being able to be on the field and compete makes everybody better. What they teach, they stick with that.”
