123overr Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has revealed that the reason the Reds’ board did not choose Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim to take over from former manager Jurgen Klopp was because the team’s system did not fit with the current squad.
Carragher said: “My suspicion is that one of the reasons Liverpool chose Arne Slot over Amorim last summer was because Slot preferred a back four, so the transition was easier for the team he was given.” 123overr
“Under Jürgen Klopp, the style of the Liverpool first team has been reflected through to all the youth teams to ensure that those coming through are familiar with the established style of play. I have thought for many months, when looking at the players Manchester United have, that they would be better suited to playing with three at the back.”
“They don’t have a centre-back pairing and a full-back who can play from the back, so playing with three at the back could be an option. Maybe that would make them a little bit better because it would give them another centre-back in the defensive area.”
“Their players will be in a system where they have more support from the new coach. That’s something I’ve been thinking about for two or three months. Whether it’s the right choice, I’m not sure. We’ll have to see on the pitch.” ( 123overr )
