Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken expects 30-year-old running back Derrick Henry to play a key role for the Ravens in the 2024 season, NFL Network reports. ( bully168 )
Henry, a former Tennessee Titans running back, signed a two-year deal with the Ravens this offseason. No running back in the NFL has carried the ball more than Henry since 2018, and Monken expects that to continue into the 2024 season.
“I know this, if (Henry) carries it 300 times, we’re going to have a hell of a year,” Monken said. “It means we’re running the ball a lot. It means we’re ready to play. We want him to close out. We want him to get closer.”
Henry joins a team that has had three of the last five seasons in ground yards, including the 2023 campaign, when it carried the ball 541 times on its way to becoming the AFC’s No. 1 team, with quarterback Lamar Jackson as its key pass-carrying force.
“I thought last year we did a good job of rotating the backs. I mean, Gus (Edwards) was solid, but we split up the reps,” Monken said. “Now, we’ve got Keaton (Mitchell) on the court and we’ve got Justice (Hill) and those guys, but I still expect the same thing, to use all the backs (and) try to put them in the best position to have success.”
Henry has rushed for 1,744 yards and 80 touchdowns since 2018. He’ll join the Ravens’ starting running backs alongside Mitchell, who shined in his rookie season following the departures of J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards this offseason.
