New York Jets owner Woody Johnson says he’s ready to take a look at himself and improve to become a better owner after criticism of his role led to Gang Green’s disappointing 5-12 record heading into the 2024 season, ESPN reports. ( bully168 )
“I definitely have to look in the mirror and I want to be a better owner,” Johnson said after the unveiling of Aaron Glenn and Darren Mukey, the new head coach and general manager of Gang Green. “And I’m trying to get better.”
Johnson, 77, was more involved than usual last season and was the first in his 25 years as owner of the team to fire head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas during the offseason in Weeks 6 and 12, respectively.
But the decision to fire Saleh as head coach has done more harm than good, as the Jets have gone 3-9 under acting head coach Jeff Ulbrich.
Asked if he plans to let go more in 2025, Johnson addressed The Athletic’s stories about internal issues at his organization, saying, “You don’t believe those reports, do you?”
‘It’s an exaggeration, a big exaggeration,’ Johnson said. ‘You don’t have to pay too much attention to these things because you don’t know how much. No one knows how much I contributed.’
‘Yes, I want Aaron Glenn to coach the team. I want the GM to manage the assets and the players, and I will be the owner.’
‘I have to be patient or whatever, I have to let them develop in these positions, which I think they will do. I think it will be fast, but I think they will develop.’
