The 28-year-old was injured in the 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa and then missed the 3-0 win over Ipswich, but has now confirmed that he will end the season in the long-term interests of all parties involved.
“It looks like he’s going to be tough to get back in but really, you can’t just shut Joe out,” Howe said at his pre-match press conference ahead of the match against Brighton on May 3.
“That guy is still motivated to come back and play.”
“Last week, he felt uncomfortable in his knee, so he went to see a specialist for advice. The advice he got was that it wasn’t anything serious, he just needed to rest for a while.”
“He is in Brazil now, so we will see if we can get him back to the group before the end of the season, but it doesn’t look like it will be in time.”
“It’s not a new injury. It’s connected to the previous knee injury, so I don’t feel 100%.”
