Panthers general manager Marty Hurney confirmed Wednesday that Newton will not be used against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, with Taylor Heinicke starting and Kyle Allen playing on the bench. But Carolina coach Ron Rivera said the 29-year-old quarterback could play his final game in New Orleans if the team is in the playoff race until the final game.
‘He’s still on the 53-man roster all the way,’ Rivera said. ‘It’s crazy enough that something is going to happen and we’ll see from there.’
‘We had a chance to meet with the medical team, the coaches and Cam himself. In talking to Marty and the owner (David Tepper), we looked at the best chance we could have to win our football games by having a healthy Taylor starting this week.’
“He understands our mindset after it. He’s frustrated. He’s frustrated. He wants to play. We had a good conversation. He understands what we need to do,” Rivera said of the 29-year-old quarterback.
Newton has been battling a right shoulder injury since throwing 22 times in the fourth quarter of a comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 21, before the team collectively decided to rest Cam for Sunday’s game against the Falcons to avoid further injury. ( bgames666 )
