Rodgers had a combined 49 sacks in 2018 and 22 in 2017, all in just seven games. But the tight end had the most sacks, 51 and 50, in 2012 and 2009. Part of that is because the 35-year-old quarterback keeps the ball for longer periods of time to make big plays.
“Honestly, I think it’s easier to sack Aaron Rodgers than any other quarterback,” Lawson said. “He’s there and he’s slapping the ball. At the same time, chasing him doesn’t mean anything. If you don’t do it for four quarters, you know, he’s going to come back and fight us.”
‘So, I mean, he’s a very easy quarterback to sack for me personally because he’s there and he’s got maybe 8, 10 yards in the pocket. He’s got a great left tackle (David Bakhtiari), so he’s there. He waits, he waits and reads the play. When he gets sacked, he doesn’t get mad. I’ve only seen him get frustrated sometimes.
Over the course of 14 professional seasons and 11 as a starter, Rodgers has had a combined 403 sacks, an average of 36.6 sacks per season. He has had two seasons with 50 sacks and two with more than 45 sacks. Former Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre is the all-time leading tight end with 525 sacks.
The hardest quarterback to sack, according to Lawson, is, “It’s probably the young quarterbacks that the offensive coaches are protecting a lot. Maybe it’s (Mitchell) Trubisky (Chicago Bears) or somebody like that. They’re there maybe five steps, they read the game quick. A lot of them are like that. I’m not saying they’re not great players or anything like that, but they’re getting a lot more help from their offensive line (than Rodgers).”
