Johnson, 38, has served three seasons as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, replacing Matt Eberflus, who was fired on Nov. 29, and will become the 19th head coach in the franchise’s 109-year history.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Johnson is in the process of assembling his staff, with former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen the front-runner to become defensive coordinator, and he is also looking to bring in Saints acting head coach Darren Rizzi to be the special teams coach.
Johnson interviewed with the Bears online on Jan. 11 during the Lions’ first-round playoff bye. He also interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders and New England Patriots before the Patriots hired Mike Vrabel as their new head coach.
The Bears previously interviewed 17 candidates for the job, including one-on-one interviews with Mike McCarthy, Ron Rivera and Tennessee State head coach Eddie George, before deciding on Lions offensive coordinator Johnson as the new head coach.
Johnson has turned down interest from teams in recent years, but now the 38-year-old has accepted the Bears’ head coaching job to work with former 2024 first-round draft pick Caleb Williams. ( bgames666 )
