Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Greer is confident in former second-round draft pick Cam Smith’s potential to replace outgoing cornerback Jalen Ramsey, 30, according to NFL Network. betflikth99
The Dolphins and Ramsey are both open to a trade away from Miami this offseason, with the Dolphins planning to push Smith, a former 2023 second-round draft pick, to replace the 30-year-old cornerback, even though the 24-year-old has played just 155 combined snaps over the past two seasons.
“Cam Smith has to come in eventually,” Greer said of the 24-year-old cornerback. “He’s got to get healthy and get on the field. He’s shown some potential, but this is a big year. He knows what’s coming because we can’t hold him in our hands and wait for him anymore.”
Smith played just 22 snaps on special teams in his rookie season and struggled with hamstring and shoulder injuries last season, limiting him to 133 snaps in six games. Over the course of two seasons, he has played a combined 155 snaps and has struggled to cover the floor after allowing opponents to catch the ball 16-of-19.
The Dolphins currently have Smith and Kader Cohu as options at nickel, while Artie Burns is approaching 30 and undrafted players Storm Duck, Ethan Bonner, Isaiah Johnson and Jason Maitri are on the roster at cornerback. ( betflikth99 )
