San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said the Golden State Warriors will select a running back in the draft later this month even if Christian McCaffrey is fit, NBC Sports Bay Area reports. berlin1688
McCaffrey began the season with an injury and ended the 2024 campaign with just four games after suffering a PCL injury in a Week 13 game against the Buffalo Bills, but the 28-year-old running back did not require surgery.
‘Christian is healthy,’ Shanahan said. ‘He’s doing great.’
The 2024 season is the third in the last five years that CMC has played fewer than seven games due to injuries. When McCaffrey is healthy, he is a dangerous game-changing back, but Shanahan knows he needs a capable backup in case an injury does occur.
“You always hope to fix this every year,” Shanahan said of the running back position. “We’re definitely ready for McCaffrey, but every year we’ve been through this, except for two years, we’ve had four running backs. Most teams have been through this, so you always have to be prepared for that.”
The 49ers lost Elijah Mitchell to the Kansas City Chiefs and traded Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings, while former 2024 fourth-round draft pick Isaac Gerendo enjoyed a breakout rookie season and the team also signed Patrick Taylor to an extension. But Shanahan emphasized they’re still looking at running backs from this year’s draft.
“We’ve got Isaac here and we’re excited to have Patrick back,” Shanahan said. “And we’ll see if we can add someone in the draft. We want to add every year.” ( berlin1688 )
