The Kansas City Chiefs plan to place a $23.4 million franchise tag on Trey Smith to extend the time they can negotiate a long-term deal until July 15, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. berlin1688
The former sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft class is a free agent, but the Chiefs are reluctant to part with the 25-year-old and are planning to sign a one-year, $23.4 million deal that would make him the highest-paid guard in NFL history, surpassing Landon Dickerson, who is getting $21 million a year from the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs and Smith then have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal, or the 25-year-old guard will be locked into a one-year deal for the 2025 season.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said he was optimistic Smith could be reached on a long-term deal in the future, but the Chiefs may need to add a $23.4 million tag to extend negotiations into mid-July. ( berlin1688 )
