The Bengals had planned to work out a long-term deal with Higgins, but the Panthers needed some time to work with the 25-year-old wide receiver to make it happen, so they decided to use the franchise tag for a second straight year on Higgins, extending his time through July 15.
If Higgins signs and plays another year under the deal, he will receive $26.2 million guaranteed in 2025, which is 120 percent of the $20.6 million he will receive from the tag in 2024.
The Bengals still have a lot of work to do this offseason, including working on a long-term deal with number one wide receiver Jamar Chase, 30-year-old defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who is set to hit free agency, and veteran wide receiver Mike Gesicki after releasing veteran guard Alex Kappa to free up $10.2 million in salary-cap space.
