United boss Erik ten Aag warned Rashford about the importance of a healthy lifestyle last week and then hit back at Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp over the player’s suspension for Crystal Palace due to behind-the-scenes issues. ( superwin636 )
But Hasselbaink, who spent 17 months as Gareth Southgate’s assistant and helped coach England’s forwards, has raised doubts about Rashford’s commitment after he was left out of the Euro 2024 squad in the summer.
“When you look at Marcus Rashford and look at his body language, I’m not saying it’s true, but it doesn’t seem like football is his main focus,” Hasselbaink said.
“Do we know if Rashford can play football? Yes, absolutely yes. When he plays on the left and plays his best football, he is a very good player.”
“When he was at his peak, he used to have a lot of early pace and run in behind defenders. He used to work very hard to run at defenders. That was when Marcus was at his best and I haven’t seen that anymore.”
“For a player like Rashford, when one of your main attributes is explosive speed, you have to suffer for your art.”
“You have to be prepared to give everything, to work hard whether you have the ball or not, and that means you have to feel a little bit of pain because it’s a lot of energy to ask your body to do that every game. I don’t see players willing to push themselves as much as they used to.”
