The Cincinnati Bengals may want to diversify Jeff Driskel’s game by having the 26-year-old quarterback practice outside wide receiver on Tuesday. According to news reports from ‘The Athletic’ last Wednesday  ( lisbon365  )

Driskel, formerly drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 class, was taken by the San Francisco 49ers. Released in September of the same year before the Bengals signed a contract to join the team to compete for Andy Dalton’s backup position.

The Bengals’ coaching staff surprised them at practice on Tuesday by sending Driskel to practice as outside wing, his first time playing that position in his career. It is considered that the 26-year-old player, who is 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds, has the qualities and physicality to be able to play more than just one quarterback position, but Driskel still insists that he still Probably the quarterback.

‘I’m still a competitive quarterback,’ Driskel told The Athletic’s Jay Morrison. ‘That’s what I want to be. That’s what I think I can be. But I just want to show that I can add value to this team in other ways and show that I want to contribute and can contribute.’

Driskel reportedly spoke with Bengals special teams coach Darrin Simmons on Monday about his part and had another conversation Tuesday morning. That was before the 26-year-old quarterback was informed by head coach Zach Taylor that he would practice playing outside wing. But he insists his decision is not yet about eliminating Driskel from the quarterback battle.

‘I will make this clear. He is not out of the quarterback race under any circumstances. He just feels like he can help us and we feel like he can help us on special teams and you saw him play outside wing a couple of times. He’s a great athlete, he’s 232 pounds, he’s got good hands. They found the job difficult to get away with.’

‘We will continue to watch him. But it won’t change He’s going to a meeting with the quarterback. He will go to individual training as a quarterback. He still does his duty. There was no elimination from that position,’ Taylor revealed.

However, Driskel’s position as Andy Dalton’s backup quarterback is not guaranteed as he was in 2018 after the Bengals drafted Ryan Fin. Crowley joins the team this year as a fourth-round pick. The former NC State quarterback has been quite impressive during training camp and preseason games.

Driskel played in 9 games last season. Hit 105 of 176 attempts for 1,003 yards, 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He started in all five games after Dalton was placed on the injured list after Week 12.
