Villarreal deployed Arnaut Danjuma to lead the attack alongside Gerard Moreno, while Atletico Madrid sent Alexander Sørloth, who just joined from Villarreal, to face his old team immediately, while Julian Alvarez, another new striker, started on the bench. 

Villarreal took the lead 1-0 in the 18th minute when Diego Conde crossed long for Arnaut Danjuma who sped from his own half and faced off with Axel Witsel before moving to the left and firing home a superb shot from a tight angle. ( vox888 )

But Atletico Madrid equalised quickly two minutes later when Antoine Griezmann passed the ball on the right to Marcos Llorente, who dribbled it into the penalty area before taking a shot from an unlikely angle, but it was well-taken and went wide of the near post.

In the 37th minute, the home team took the lead again, making it 2-1. Alex Baena took a corner kick that was cleared and he crossed it again, but the ball hit Koke, the visiting team’s veteran player, and bounced into his own goal.

In injury time, Atletico Madrid equalized again. Pablo Barrios crossed from the right into the penalty area for Alexander Sørloth to head the ball down before passing Conde’s hand into the net. It was a goal against Sørloth’s former team.

  In the second half, both teams tried to score the winning goal, but neither side succeeded. Julian Alvarez was substituted to help the away team in the 78th minute, but there was no score. The game ended with Villarreal drawing with Atletico Madrid 2-2, sharing the points in the first match of the new season.
